Can't resolve schema '[version]' in 'report.json'

Power BI
ErrorIn a project JSON file

In general form, with the parts that change in brackets:

Can't resolve schema '[version]' in 'report.json'

What it means

The report inside the file names a schema version that this Power BI Desktop does not know. It shows when you open a .pbix saved by a newer release.

Check your project for this

Opens the Report Doctor with this message filled in. The text travels in the URL fragment, which browsers never send to a server.

Usually
A newer release saved the fileAn older install of Power BI Desktop opened it
Fix
Update Power BI Desktop to the latest release, not the Report Server one.

How the message appears

Copied exactly from each source. A name in square brackets replaced one from someone else's project.

Can't resolve schema '2.1.0' in 'report.json'
Microsoft forum: Error Message "Can't resolve schema '2.1.0' in 'report.json'. Read 2026-10-19.

The fix

Update Power BI Desktop to the latest release, not the Report Server one. If more than one is installed, start the newest and open the file from there.

In report.json:

Names a version this release does not know
"$schema": "https://developer.microsoft.com/json-schemas/fabric/item/report/definition/report/3.3.0/schema.json"

Line 1: change 3.3 to 1.2.

Names a version it knows
"$schema": "https://developer.microsoft.com/json-schemas/fabric/item/report/definition/report/1.2.0/schema.json"

In a PBIP project, report.json names its schema version on this line. The fix is a newer Power BI Desktop, not this edit: a newer version can hold things an older release cannot read.

What causes it

  1. A newer release saved the file

In the quoted case a .pbix downloaded from the Power BI service would not open, and a copy of the same report from two weeks earlier did. The reply marked as the solution asks whether Power BI Desktop is the latest version and says to update it. Another reply says the file was saved with a newer report schema than that Desktop supports.

Source: Error Message "Can't resolve schema '2.1.0' in 'report.json'.

The Report Doctor can't detect this, because which versions are accepted depends on the release of Power BI Desktop that opens the file, and the Report Doctor reads project folders, not a .pbix.
  2. An older install of Power BI Desktop opened it

The same reply says that with more than one Power BI Desktop installed (Store, MSI or Report Server), the file may open in the older one. Start the newest Power BI Desktop first, then open the file from File, Open.

Source: Error Message "Can't resolve schema '2.1.0' in 'report.json'.

The Report Doctor can't detect this, because the Report Doctor cannot see which programs are installed.

Worth knowing

NoteMicrosoft publishes the report.json schema for 2.1.0 and for 3.3.0. The Report Doctor has both, so it checks a PBIP project that names either one.

NoteIf the message says the /$schema property must be provided as a const, see that page.

Check a project in your browser

The Power BI Report Doctor reads a PBIP folder or .zip and lists the file and line to fix. Nothing is uploaded.

For the other messages a project can stop on, listed by the file that causes each, see Power BI Desktop can't open a PBIP.
