What Studio shows

Studio opens a Power BI project and draws each page with made-up values, because a report file holds no data. Click a visual to see where its numbers come from. It also runs the Report Doctor's checks on the same files.

What it opens

A PBIP project folder, or the same folder as a .zip.
A .pbit file. Studio shows everything, down to the sources.
A .pbix file. Studio shows the pages and the visuals only. The model is stored with the data, and Studio never opens the data.

From a visual to its source

Pick a visual and Studio follows it back one step at a time: the measures it uses, the measures those use, the columns and their tables, the Power Query steps that load each table, and the source. That chain is the visual's lineage. Developer mode adds the DAX, the source call, and the file and line each one is in.

Where a measure is used

Pick a calculation in the list and Studio shows how many visuals use it, and on how many pages. A measure that no visual uses says so.

Nothing you open is uploaded

Your browser reads the files itself, and opens only the ones on the first list. The data inside a .pbix, its DataModel, is never opened. Every other file is listed by name and never read. Nothing is stored.

Your JSON and text are processed entirely in your browser and are never sent anywhere. To understand how the site is used we record each page view (the page, the referrer, an approximate location from your IP address, and whether you are a person, a bot or a script) and keep it for 90 days. Nothing is stored on your device unless you choose it. Accept to also store a device identifier here and record your browser and device characteristics, which is what lets a return visit be told from a new one. Decline and no page view is sent. A vote you click on an error page is still counted, and nothing about you is stored. We respect Do Not Track. See our privacy policy.
