Field list item has error

Power BI

In general form, with the parts that change in brackets:

Field list item has error

What it means

Power BI shows this as a warning triangle beside an item in the Data pane. The forum has two cases: a display bug on Direct Lake tables, since fixed, and calculation items that cleared after one change.

Usually
A display bug on Direct Lake tables, since fixedCalculation items, cleared by quoting table names
Fix
If the tables are Direct Lake tables in the service, select Edit tables and confirm, as the poster did.

How the message appears

Copied exactly from each source. A name in square brackets replaced one from someone else's project.

Field List item has error
Microsoft forum: one or more calculation groups need to be manually refreshed. Read 2026-11-08.[1]

What causes it

  1. A display bug on Direct Lake tables, since fixed

A user saw the triangle on every table of every semantic model on a warehouse. The answer marked as the solution says a bug showed Direct Lake tables with this warning, and that it is fixed. The poster said the warnings went away after Edit tables and confirming.

Source: Semantic model on warehouse: Field list item has errors[2].

The Report Doctor can't detect this, because it was a display bug in the service, not a fault in the files.
  2. Calculation items, cleared by quoting table names

One user saw it on each calculation item of a calculation group, with a message that one or more calculation groups need to be manually refreshed. Writing the table names in quotes, like 'table1'[column1], seemed to resolve it, their reply says. It does not say why.

Source: one or more calculation groups need to be manually refreshed[1].

The Report Doctor can't detect this, because the reply gives no cause, so there is nothing for a file check to look for.

The fix

If the tables are Direct Lake tables in the service, select Edit tables and confirm, as the poster did. On calculation items, write the table names in quotes, like 'Dates'[Date], and save. One user found that resolved it.

In tables/Time Intelligence.tmdl:

Table name without quotes
DATESYTD ( Dates[Date] )

Line 1: add ' twice.

In quotes, as the reply did
DATESYTD ( 'Dates'[Date] )

One user cleared the warning on calculation items this way. The reply does not say why it worked.

The Power BI Report Doctor cannot find this. One case was a display bug in the service, and the other reply gives no cause to look for.

For the other messages a project can stop on, listed by the file that causes each, see Power BI Desktop can't open a PBIP.
