Cannot find table '[name]'
Power BIIn general form, with the parts that change in brackets:
Query ([line], [column]) Cannot find table '[name]'.
DAX named a table that the model it ran against does not have. In DAX query view the message starts with Query (line, column), the place in the query where the name is.
- Usually
- A table was renamed, and a saved query still uses the old nameThe model the query runs against does not have the table yetA text value is in single quotes
- Fix
- Go to the line and column the message gives, and read the table name there.
Check your project opens the Report Doctor with this message filled in. The text travels in the URL fragment, which browsers never send to a server.
How the message appears
Copied exactly from each source. A name in square brackets replaced one from someone else's project.
Resolve the error to see results Query (236, 130) Cannot find table 'FactSales'.

Query (13, 52) Cannot find table '[table name]'.Cannot find table '[text value]'.What causes it
A table was renamed, and a saved query still uses the old name
Power BI Desktop saves each DAX query view tab as a file in
DAXQueries/. When we renamed the tableFactSalestoSales, Desktop rewrote the name everywhere in the model: measures, relationships, field parameters and visuals. It left the saved query tab alone. Running the tab gave this message.Query (236, 130)is the line and the column in the saved file, counted from 1, and it points at the old name.Source: Power BI Desktop 2.159.883.0, Studio fixture F13c[1].
The Report Doctor can't detect this, because the saved query tabs are inDAXQueries/, which the Report Doctor does not read. The model the query runs against does not have the table yet
In the quoted thread a DAX query ran from Power Automate against the published semantic model. The table was in the poster's Power BI Desktop file, but that version had not been published. Publishing it fixed the error.
Source: Run a query against a dataset Error - Cannot find table[2].
The Report Doctor can't detect this, because the query ran against the published model, not the project files.A text value is in single quotes
In the quoted thread a measure compared a column with a text value in single quotes, and the message named that value as a table. The poster's fix was the quotation marks. In DAX, a name in single quotes is a table, and text goes in double quotes.
Source: Cannot find table[3].
The Report Doctor finds this. It reports “DAX names something the model does not have”, with the file and line.
The fix
Go to the line and column the message gives, and read the table name there. Change it to the table's current name, or publish the model that has the table. If the name is a text value, put it in double quotes.
In DAXQueries/acceptance.dax:
DISTINCTCOUNT ( FactSales[InvoiceLineID] )Line 1: delete Fact.
DISTINCTCOUNT ( Sales[InvoiceLineID] )Line 236 of our saved query tab. Power BI Desktop renamed the table everywhere in the model, but not here.
The Power BI Report Doctor reads a PBIP folder or .zip and lists the file and line to fix. Nothing is uploaded. For the other messages a project can stop on, listed by the file that causes each, see Power BI Desktop can't open a PBIP.
Worth knowing
- Power BI Desktop saves DAX query view tabs in
DAXQueries/and TMDL view scripts inTMDLScripts/. A rename in Desktop changes neither, so check them after you rename a table.
